Energy Conservation Week (May 17-23, 2009)

The second annual Energy Conservation Week runs from May 17 to 23, 2009. Throughout the week, Ontarians in cities and towns across the province will be conserving energy, saving money and reducing greenhouse gases though a variety of ways.

First and foremost, this week is about you and what you can do. And there’s lots you can do. You can pledge, post, join and share, whether you’re an individual or part of an organization.

Collectively, the steps we take contribute to a cleaner, healthier Ontario.

Click here to get started with your pledge.

The week itself is the focal point of a four-month campaign that runs from a launch in April to a community challenge in August. Stay tuned for more information as we get closer to May 17.

  The Great Refrigerator Roundup
The Great Refrigerator Roundup is a program designed to remove older, inefficient fridges and freezers from the electricity system and fully decommission them in an environmentally friendly manner.
Generally, these older secondary fridges and freezers, located in basements or garages, are plugged in but rarely used. These older units typically use two to three times more electricity than new appliances.
You have several options:
  1. You can book on-line by visiting the Ontario Power Authority’s website at (http://www.everykilowattcounts.com/).  It will provide you with specific program launch dates in your area of the province and will allow you to sign up for a pick up time on line.

  2. You may also book an appointment by calling the Ontario Power Authority’s Customer Contact Centre at  1-877-797-9473

Changes to Electricity Commodity Prices for Public Sector (MUSH) coming November 1, 2009

Most municipalities, universities, schools and hospitals and other designated customers who are still on the Regulated Price Plan (RPP) will no longer be billed the RPP rate starting Nov. 1, 2009.

This change applies to all accounts with consumption greater than 250,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) per year and demand greater than 50 kilowatts (which is equivalent to an electricity bill of approximately $2,000 per month).

On November 1, 2009, these customers will pay Ontario's market price for the energy portion of their bill – that is, the hourly electricity price or a weighted average electricity price.
